For my Jumanlanpelko fans, how are we feeling about the comic’s ending? There’s an epilogue coming, but the main story is over. This comic has been quite the ride. The last chapter was just so consequential. This cat cult comic is the polar opposite of a story like What Lurks Beneath. By that, God isn’t real in WLB and The Tide is just some hermit crab. True power is held by the monarch and their advisors. In Jumanlanpelko, She (the protector god) is very much real, and has more understanding of the cats in her cult than she actually lets on. She can make her presence and anger known, and Guard’s confrontation with her was nothing short of explosive. I’ve read the final chapter four times since it was released a few days ago. I’d like to write some thoughts on it once I get a chance, though I might wait for the epilogue.
As for The Dragon Slayer review, I had a lot that came up at week’s end. The start of this week isn’t looking much better on a personal front. Again, the review is written, it just needs to be edited and proofed. It will be up sooner than later. I’m just sorry it’s taking me so long.

It’s official, Nuru is taking the position of matriarch for herself. While the clan was divided several days ago, they all seem united against Faida now. With the sole exception of Faida’s mate, Badru. I’m of two minds here. Even though Nuru is going for a low blow by taking a jab at the matriarch and her lack of cubs, she’s not totally in the wrong. She took the time to have the clan vote, and she found the elephant to begin with. Meanwhile, Faida has focused so hard on getting revenge on Bes, and wanting Africa to succeed her as leader, that she neglected her own clan.
First, she failed to relay her revenge desires to the rest of the hyenas. I doubt they would have agreed with her. Next, she unilaterally made plans to have Africa be her successor, and even put the priority of the cats above her kin. For example, Africa had semi-successful hunts while the rest of the clan went hungry. Faida should have been prioritizing feeding her clan while making sure they didn’t harm their cat members.
Perhaps that could have looked like sending more hunters out, or having the cats leave once Mondo was older to conserve resources. Not much could have been done about Safari after his leg was badly injured. At a bare minimum, Faida should have been more open with her clan. She should have never offered the role of matriarch to Africa, as the leopard wouldn’t have taken it, and it made the clan resentful.
All that said, I do believe Nuru is making a mistake in completely brushing aside Faida’s concerns about the giant carcass. The clan might not be coughing or appear to be sick, but I firmly believe that foul meat will affect the clan eventually. It might be delayed sickness, or something that targets the vulnerable. I just can’t believe the hyenas will be completely spared from whatever’s happening.

I wasn’t expecting a return to Melissa and Krizman. Even as his body dies, he makes one final plea. If Melissa could know what those absorbed by the Black Idol remembered, or could see, she wouldn’t have rejected them. I’m kind of surprised at how desperate the idol seems through the fox. I would love to know more about the Black Idol and its thoughts even as there’s not much of this comic left. (We’re at the penultimate issue right now.)
All this time the idol has been largely regarded as an animalistic creature trying to become whole, but there’s definitely more to the story. Why did the gods decide to give the people of Earth distinct forms, split off from the Black Mass? Is it a truly universal threat that originated on Earth? Does it come from somewhere else? Do other nations besides Egypt know about the idol? Who are the aliens collaborating with it?
For now let’s focus this page. At the moment, Melissa’s condition is concerning. I thought she’d transformed into Kenazil, but it seems like the black dog just used her body to manifest, then left her to die. It’s concerning she hasn’t moved once during Krizman’s plea. The only glimmer of hope that I have is that the light hasn’t left Melissa’s eyes, unlike the fox next to her. That said, unless help arrives immediately, I’m not sure how long the tiger has left before she bleeds out. Surely, Julia is on her way. Right? Right???

In The Lion’s Den: The Scarlet Uproar | Page(s): 67-68 | Patreon
There’s a lot happening in The Lion’s Den. Given Klea Rathburn’s speech, I get the impression the city is well, a city state, and not a city within a state, province, or ward. The Lion’s Den sounds like it’s ready to either invade its neighbors, take the giant-owned countryside by force, or do a bit of both. But before that expansion can happen, the local undesirables must eliminated. And by the city’s therian, Maximus the Revenant at The Gathering. It’s part sport for the masses, and a purge for the government. If there was any doubt the current leadership of the city were fascists, this page should put said doubts to rest. This is a speech right out of the fascist playbook, and instead of a firing squad, or hanging, a giant lion (based on this book’s cover) will do the murdering.
I’m curious to see if this is a straight-up slaughter, or something closer to gladiator sport, where not every combatant is killed. Considering the masked cat mentioned he was detained twice already, there must an option where some people are allowed to leave. Let’s see how Kay fares. On another note, I do find it fascinating that the therian has a name, unlike its counterpart in The Wolf’s Veil. Maybe because there is a city myth, and Maximus and their supporters are feeding into it?

Poor Tulpi is having a full-blown panic attack combined with the start of self-harm. The jagged panels really convey her inner turmoil. Additionally, this episode of hers is extremely relatable. The thoughts, wanting to escape, being in dialogue with yourself, and an overwhelming negative voice. At this point, I’m really glad someone broke Tulpi out of her thoughts. I’m guessing its Desna.
I’d wager Motte won’t blame her friend for this, as the cage snapping open really was an accident. Hopefully the Borzoi-mix will be able to see that Tulpi needs her reassurance more than anything. Though part of me fears this will be something that simmers below the surface before it explodes if Motte doesn’t take notice of her friend’s feelings.

Ranach has quite the gathering for his speech. Though most of the dogs are hostile to him and the fact that he was once leader of the Meteor Tribe. Other than a bunch of dogs who went out of their way to antagonize the Norgarde Tribe, and Axi who was fired from the Guild for misconduct, I’m not why anyone would willingly attend a meeting led by a dog they despise. Perhaps, the saying “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” is in full effect here? I fully expected to see Flameguard Tribe present given their falling out with Solar Stag Tribe. Heck maybe even Bhima given the thorny situation with the Forngrym and Shiverfall Tribe.
Still, I can’t figure why Ranach suddenly cares enough to lead the rebellion against Solar Stag. They just happened to look away from him and his father’s crimes as the Meteor Tribe. I guess he was so used to no one caring that it was shocking that SST attempted to do something about Southspear Tribe and that bruised his ego? Otherwise, I can’t really buy any sort of actual redemption for Ranach, even if that’s what this author badly wants. Even him being invested in Southspear outside of wanting to bone Iberon is suspect to me.
On another note, I sorely wish there had been build up to Solar Stag having an evil, power-hungry faction. The tribe turning a blind eye to the actions of the Meteor Tribe under Arenak could have been foreshadowing. But no. It just feels like Kique needed an antagonist for Ranach to stand against, and the SST had to be a big enough threat for him to leave his former tribe alone. It was only after he joined Southspear that we saw the capital demolishing a new tribe, trying to make an alliance with NG, and we had the reveal regarding the genocide of the Forngrym. Again, I’m not disappointed that the SST is evil, but a proper buildup to this reveal would have been nice.
That said, I’m curious to see if any of the dogs air their possible grievances against the largest tribe on Aedra. They must have a good reason to be putting up with Ranach and his speech.

I just though Ranach wanted to destroy the remains of the Meteor tribe/Nordegarde and get revenge, and was using the whole Solar Stag thing as a means to that end. I feel like he only kind of actually wants to get rid of Solar Stag, if he cares at all. I also don’t think Solar Stag is evil? They overstep a lot, aren’t very organized, and have stopped listening to the Matriarch but that doesn’t mean they’re an antagonist at all. Also, you keep talking about a Ranach redemption and I don’t see that happening at all, I’m very confused as to how you’re picking up on that. Maybe it’s just me but I think he’s very much still being portrayed as irredeemable and evil?
For the first part of your question, would you be willing to bring it up to me in about two or three pages? I’d like to hear your thoughts then.
But to actually reply now, The thing with the rebellion is he’s going against Solar Stag. Ranach didn’t care about that at all until AFTER SST attacked Southspear in the bounty hunter attack. You can see him wanting to get back at them shortly after the attack on page 712.
https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/729/
On 713 he keeps pushing until Iberon snaps at him. https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/730/
He thing brings it up again on pages 758 and 759.
https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/776/
https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/777/
Nowhere in these pages does he ever mention the MT under Ronja. And when he goes out and starts gathering interest in the rebellion, it’s for Solar Stag, but the MT is never brought up. Given how much animosity there is toward the MT, you think he would have slipped that in somewhere. But no, his focus seems to be completely in taking out Solar Stag Tribe. Even in this speech where he’s talking about the capital, he could have easily drummed up support for attacking the MT, but instead he brings the speech back to the Solar Stag. Now, you could make an argument that he could be playing a VERY long game which involves taking down SST, then maybe turning his rebellion against Ronja and what’s left of the MT. If that did happen, well, I’d be impressed and happy. Part of me now wants this to happen, but every time I’ve gotten my hopes for something like this in Home, I’ve been disappointed. So far nothing that I’ve seen from this indicates that Ranach is still obsessed with getting revenge on the MT. Seems like he took Ulfr’s advice to run only after attacking and killing Kargo. He seems to have largely gotten what he wanted in killing Kargo and moved on from there, especially after losing Ávantifegr once her curse was broken.
For Solar Stag, I feel like the story wants me to treat them as evil. Especially given page 810. https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/828/ Why on earth did they see fit to remove a tribe that wanted an alliance with them? Otherwise, I completely agree. Before page 810 I would have just called them pushy and incompetent.
Then Shiverfall Tribe reveals, that they just barely tolerated the Taiga Lions, and won’t let the issue of one Forngrym go. https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/879/ and https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/880/ Then Ninmah outright states the tribe isn’t listening to her on page 863 and that she’s actively fine with letting the Forngrym go while the rest of Solar Stag says no. Worse, she fears if she leaves the ship, her tribe will see that she’s a Liulfr and kill her. https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/882/
Finally, Baron and Viscountess of Solar Stag Tribe try to make a deal to have Kargo fight for them against the Rebellion. They used the threat of taking Diarko away as attempted leverage. Notice how the Viscountess pushes back somewhat, but the Baron pushes forward? https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/930/ This is where I’m getting my theory that there’s an evil faction in SST, and it’s lead by Faekas. I think Lahmina is still aligned with Ninmah, BUT doesn’t feel like she has the power to stand up to Faekas.
Finally, I would love if the story still pushed for Ranach to be evil and irredeemable (as he’s crossed so many lines), but something did change when he joined Southspear. Specifically him seeing a tribe that doesn’t play by the rules of the capital, but doesn’t randomly kill other dogs (outside of self-defense) or mistreat their own members.
Ranach shocked at the kindness he was shown after falling behind (though not everyone agreed) during the set up for a raid: https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/617/
Then him being surprised and mulling over the fact that they don’t plan to kill the dogs they’re raiding: https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/618/
Him them asking Iberon why they spared them, and again thinking about that. https://home-comic.thecomicseries.com/comics/622/
This shows me that Ranach isn’t being redeemed to be totally good, but something closer to an anti-villain. https://nofilmschool.com/anti-villain
Basically all the evil shit he did could possibly be swept under the rug, and he never faces any real consequences for killing his father, Zilas, Jonna, Fuss, Ulfr, Kargo, and attempting to kill Rogio. Now, if I’m wrong, I’ll be happy. Basically, the only thing that’s giving me hope right now is that fans like yourself still see Ranach as being beyond redemption, and Kique may pick up on that vibe and have him face consequences since the audience isn’t feeling a redemption.
Whew! Sorry for the long response. I wanted to give you a detailed reply of why I think the things I think.
Again, thank you! It’s nice to engage with the story like this. I will be checking in on the site regularly now, so I will keep commenting.
What you describe with the long game and taking down Ronja after SST —yes, that’s exactly what I’ve been expecting, although now that you point it out, I can see that might not happen. Which would be stupid, as the whole story so far has been building up Ronja as a leader in opposition to Ranach, I feel like. All the times he’s been shown as changing as a result of being in Southspear (as well as his anger at SST), I interpreted as just his emotional instability and ambiguous personality, just like the mood swings he displayed at the start of the story. Just in a bit of a new way. Nordegarde still sees him as a major threat and is expecting him to come back someday, at least that’s what I felt the setup had been until a page or so ago when Roamer says SST might be the one to put an end to him… I remember reading that and thinking, “Surely that’s not what’s actually going to happen.” It would be very unsatisfying. Ronja and crew have been wanting to kill him since the beginning, they even made a sort of pact to do so (don’t remember when that was, but it was one of Roamer’s first displays of aggression when he said “I’ll kill him” and they were like “welcome to the club”).
As for SST, okay, yeah I overlooked a lot of things you bring up here. I think I assumed that the Lowglade tribe going missing was something else, kind of a mystery that was just blamed on SST. Because that was very unexplained, and at least Rhov seemed confused, like they weren’t getting the whole story. I also thought the Viscountess of Shiverfall claiming that their kind has been barely tolerated was a result of being manipulated by Ranach, at least partially. In any case, I think your ultimate conclusion is correct that there is a faction of SST that is in the wrong and it’s growing more powerful than those who are still loyal to Ninmah.
If fans can really influence the way the story goes, then I’d better start commenting on CF lol
It was a pleasure! It’s also nice to engage with someone who likes the story, but gets that it’s flawed. Saying it’s bad or it sucks isn’t much fun when you can try to tease apart what doesn’t work/why and have some appreciation for what does.
Unfortunately, Kique has this habit of building up something grand only for it to fall flat or be underwhelming. For example, the raid on the Norgarde from the other tribes, or the showdown with Marduk. It feels like Nordgarde should want Ranach dead for what he did and the members he killed (as you said!), but right now the story is trying hard to make sure don’t cross paths. From what I can tell, it feels like Solar Stag Tribe is going to be the biggest threat to both Ranach and the rebellion, while still remaining a threat to Nordgarde for turning down the request for help. Best case scenario for Ranach getting what he deserves is somehow dying in the rebellion, but if that happens I wouldn’t put it past Kique to make his death seem almost noble. Kinda like Ranulfr at the end of Asmundr. If I’m wrong, and Ranach turns out to be evil/beyond redemption in the end, I’ll be happy. Honestly, I get the feeling the story can’t decide if Ranach is a villain or anti-villain.
If Lowglade had gone missing for supernatural reasons and Solar Stag Tribe was just investigating, that would actually be awesome. Now I kind of wish that had happened, other than SST doing so for evil reasons because of their power-hungry faction. It’s funny, you didn’t quite get that impression from the capital until after the bounty hunt on Southspear failed, and Feaf’s mother was complaining that they barely got any support. It would have been nice if these little hints had been there early, as I get the impression that SST was originally supposed to be a force for good, but then he wanted them to be villains due to Ranach needing something to do after joining Southspear.
Hey, go for it! You never know if a theory of yours ends up making its way into Home. Just remember, if you’re commenting on CF be super respectful so your comment gets through moderation. 😀
